I often get approached by clients who are really keen to start therapy but are unsure if it’s the right time for them.

It’s a really tough one to answer but I always list these three states and ask them to reflect on them:

1. Headspace: if you are in the midst of lots of drama or deep in grief it’s not the right time. We need some ability to reflect to benefit from therapy. Waiting until you feel more balanced might be best.

2. Time: in order for therapy to be effective we need time to dedicate to regular sessions. Ideally weekly and if not fortnightly. I have clients who dip in and out and don’t prioritise therapy. Simply put it’s not the right time, it’s better to come back when you have this time to invest in therapy.

3. Financial: therapy is an investment in yourself, and if you can’t afford it at the moment, save up and wait until you can. It’s best not to put yourself under pressure, this may make you resent therapy.

If all the above situations are in place then it’s time to get in touch with a few therapists who’s values seems to resonate. Do take your time to chose the right one. Speak to them, ask questions and then when the time is right commit to the process together. The results will be so much better and your investment of time, reflection and money will really pay off.
